Pinball has long been a celebration of lights, sound, and tactile excitement — so it’s no surprise that music and pinball would eventually collide in some of the most iconic machines ever built. From the flashing guitars of Guns N' Roses to the thunderous bass of Metallica, music-licensed pinball machines have become collector favourites and fan obsessions. But where did it all start, and which ones have stood the test of time?

The history of music-themed pinball dates back decades, but the true birth of licensed band pinball machines arguably began in 1978 with Bally’s "Kiss" machine. Featuring the legendary glam rock band in their platform-booted glory, this game was a commercial success and set the tone for the genre. Players were drawn in by the machine’s bold backglass art, audio that nodded to Kiss’s stadium rock power, and the overall attitude of excess. It wasn't just pinball — it was a performance.

In the 1990s, music-licensed pinball machines truly hit their stride. A standout was Data East’s Guns N' Roses (1994), which featured original music tracks, a working guitar pick launcher, and Axl Rose’s snarling vocals. It was more than a novelty — it was a fully immersive rock-and-roll pinball experience. The machine quickly became a fan favourite, remembered for its intensity and authenticity.

Another gem from the same period was The Who’s Tommy (1994), based on the rock opera. It included unique features like a “blind” playfield mode, echoing the story of the "deaf, dumb and blind kid" who plays a mean pinball. Both of these titles proved that integrating music and storytelling could elevate gameplay into something theatrical.

Fast forward to the 2000s and 2010s, and Stern Pinball took the torch, refining and revolutionizing the genre. They released a slew of critically acclaimed machines, including:

Metallica (2013): Known for its brutal fast-paced gameplay and a killer soundtrack, this machine is a favourite among both players and collectors. It features custom voice work by band members and fan-favourite tracks like “Master of Puppets” and “One.”

AC/DC (2012): With 12 selectable songs and high-octane features like the “Highway to Hell” ramp and “Hell’s Bell” bash toy, this machine delivers thunderstruck excitement.

Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast (2018): A modern masterpiece, this game combines complex rule sets, intense flow, and spectacular artwork with one of metal’s most iconic bands.

Determining the “best” is always subjective, but a few consistently top fan rankings and tournament play:

Metallica – A perfect balance of fast gameplay, deep rules, and killer soundtrack.

Iron Maiden – Loved for its fluid play and depth.

Guns N’ Roses: Not In This Lifetime (2020, Jersey Jack Pinball) – A stunningly immersive modern game with full songs, concert footage, and a massive light show — arguably the most advanced music pinball ever made.

Music-licensed pinball machines are more than just themed cabinets; they’re a celebration of culture, sound, and spectacle. From Kiss’s first stomp into the scene to today’s technologically advanced rock operas in silverball form, these machines prove that when music and pinball come together, the result is pure magic.
