Released in 1982 by Gottlieb, Q*bert quickly became one of the most recognisable arcade games of its era.
Created by Warren Davis and Jeff Lee, the game was inspired by Lee’s drawings of colourful three-dimensional cubes. Davis developed the idea into a game where players guide Q*bert around a pyramid, changing the colour of each cube while avoiding enemies such as Coily, Ugg, Wrong-Way and Slick.
One of Q*bert’s most distinctive features was its diagonal joystick, designed specifically to match the character’s movement across the pyramid. The game also became famous for its unusual speech effects and iconic “@!#?@!” profanity symbols.
More than four decades after its original release, Q*bert remains a recognisable name among arcade fans and collectors.
Its unusual gameplay, distinctive visual identity and memorable characters helped it stand apart during one of the most competitive periods in arcade gaming. Warren Davis has since discussed the game’s development in detail as part of the Game Developers Conference’s Classic Game Postmortem series, covering everything from its early design and programming to testing, marketing and its legacy.
For anyone looking to recreate the atmosphere of a classic arcade, a Q*bert cabinet brings together gameplay, artwork and genuine 1980s arcade character in one machine.
